Cockapoos are one of the most popular breeds we see at House of Fluff, and it's easy to see why — that soft, curly coat is gorgeous. But it's also one of the highest-maintenance coats out there, and a lot of owners are surprised by just how often it needs attention.
Why cockapoo coats need so much care
A cockapoo's coat is a mix of their Cocker Spaniel and Poodle parentage, which usually means a soft, wavy or curly texture that mats easily. Left too long between grooms, loose hair gets trapped close to the skin and forms tight knots, especially behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar area.
Our general rule of thumb
Full groom: every 6–8 weeks. This keeps the coat at a manageable length and prevents matting before it starts.
At-home brushing: 2–3 times a week. A quick brush between visits makes a huge difference and means less time (and less cost) at each groom.
Puppy grooms: start early. Getting your cockapoo used to being brushed, bathed, and handled from a young age makes every future visit calmer and easier for them.
Signs your cockapoo is overdue
You can't get a comb all the way through their coat without catching; matting behind the ears or under the front legs; a dull or greasy-feeling coat; scratching more than usual — matted fur can trap dirt and irritate skin.
Booking ahead
Because cockapoo coats need this level of upkeep, it's worth booking your next appointment before you leave your current one. That way you're never scrambling to find a slot once matting has already set in.
